It works using a surface mounted brush to clear debris from the mesh as the spreader rotates. It is particularly effective when ground conditions are slightly damp or the material inside the spreader has not fully dried out (as is often the case), compost sticks to the spreader as it rolls across the ground and blocks up the holes in the mesh, preventing material inside the spreader from being distributed consistently. Worse still, if damp material sticks the surface of the spreader it can very easily pick up the grass seed on the ground as the spreader passes over it.
